She says, "Hey, babe Take a walk on the wild side" Said, "Hey, honey Take a walk on the wild side"
In this 60’s anthem, Lou Reed dares us to create our own identities, and in doing so, free ourselves to be ourselves.

2) Self-reflection
“There are places I'll remember All my life though some have changed Some forever, not for better Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall Some are dead and some are living In my life I've loved them all”
John Lennon and Paul McCartney contemplate the past, thinking of old friends and lovers with mixed emotions, acknowledging their loves and losses. Self-reflection lets us integrate all of these aspects of our life experience.

3) Self-confidence
“My mama told me when I was young We are all born superstars She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on In the glass of her boudoir
"There's nothing wrong with loving who you are" She said, "'Cause he made you perfect, babe" "So hold your head up girl and you'll go far, Listen to me when I say"
“I'm beautiful in my way 'Cause God makes no mistakes I'm on the right track, baby I was born this way”
Lady Gaga doesn’t lack for self-confidence! She knows that loving who you are and believing in yourself are the keys to going far.

4) Self-assertion
“You can get it if you really want You can get it if you really want You can get it if you really want But you must try, try and try Try and try, you'll succeed at last”
Jimmy Cliff encourages us to try and try, confident that we will succeed at last. He knows that we need self-assertion and persistence to achieve our goals.

5) Imagination
“Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us, only sky
Imagine all the people Livin' for today Ah
You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one”
John Lennon challenges us to imagine a world without the beliefs that divide us, a mental revolution that would free us to make the world “be as one”. His insight is that change of any kind starts with imagining.

6) Emotional balance
“I can see clearly now the rain is gone I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind. It's gonna be a bright (bright) Bright (bright) sunshiny day”
Oh, yes I can make it now the pain is gone All of the bad feelings have disappeared Here is that rainbow I've been praying for It's gonna be a bright (bright) Bright (bright) sunshiny day”
Jimmy Cliff seems to speak from experience when he talks about overcoming pain. He gives us hope that we, too, can find positivity and optimism, regaining emotional balance when we feel down.

7) Resilience
“Go on now, go walk out the door Just turn around now 'Cause you're not welcome anymore Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye Did you think I'd crumble Did you think I'd lay down and die Oh no not I, I will survive Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive I've got all my life to live And I've got all my love to give And I'll survive I will survive Hey, hey”
In this classic anthem, Gloria Gaynor inspires us to embrace our strength, to be resilient in the face of adversity by finding the resources within ourselves.

8) Self-control
“I need love, love to ease my mind I need to find, find someone to call mine But mama said you can't hurry love No you just have to wait She said love don't come easy It's a game of give and take You can't hurry love No, you just have to wait You gotta trust, give it time No matter how long it takes”
Here, Dianne Ross reminds herself of her mother’s advice. Sometimes, you have to be patient and exercise self-control, putting off your desires and waiting until the right love comes along.

9) Self-care
“Now baby, listen baby, don't ya treat me this way 'Cause I'll be back on my feet some day (Don't care if you do 'cause it's understood) (You ain't got no money, you just ain't no good) Well, I guess if you say so I'll have to pack my things and go (that's right)
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back No more, no more, no more, no more Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more What you say? Hit the road Jack and don't you come back No more, no more, no more, no more Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more”
In this classic by Percy Mayfield, covered by Ray Charles and Margie Hendrix, the female vocalist makes her wishes loud and clear – she wants her no-good man out of her life! Sometimes exercising self-care, taking care of our health and well-being, involves getting rid of things that aren’t good for us.

10) Reality Testing
“Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landside, No escape from reality Open your eyes, Look up to the skies and see, I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy, Because I'm easy come, easy go, Little high, little low, Any way the wind blows doesn't really matter to Me, to me”
In this poignant ballad, Freddie Mercury gives voice to a young man who is living in a nightmare that is real. He “killed a man,” and now swings back and forth between acknowledging this painful reality and denying it (”doesn’t really matter to me”).

11) Empathy
“Please swallow your pride If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill Those of your needs that you won't let show You just call on me brother when you need a hand We all need somebody to lean on I just might have a problem that you'll understand We all need somebody to lean on
Lean on me When you're not strong And I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on..."
Bill Withers knows the power of empathy. We all need empathy, but it requires us to put away our pride, take a risk, and share our vulnerabilities.

12) Compassion
“When you're down and troubled And you need some lovin' care And nothin', nothin' is goin' right Close your eyes and think of me And soon I will be there To brighten up even your darkest night
You just call out my name And you know, wherever I am I'll come runnin' To see you again Winter, spring, summer or fall All you have to do is call And I'll be there You've got a friend”
Just listening to this tender song by Carole King eases our suffering! We feel her compassion, her deep desire to comfort her friend, no matter when or where.

13) Humor
“Well she got her daddy's car And she cruised through the hamburger stand now Seems she forgot all about the library Like she told her old man now And with the radio blasting Goes cruising just as fast as she can now
And she'll have fun fun fun 'Til her daddy takes the T-bird away (Fun fun fun 'til her daddy takes the T-bird away)”
The Beach Boys embrace the carefree spirit of California in the 60’s in this tribute to fun, youth, and naughtiness.

When the night has come, and the way is dark, And that moon is the only light you see. No I won't be afraid, no I-I-I won't be afraid Just as long as the people come and stand by me.
Darlin' darlin' stand by me, ooh stand by me Oh stand Stand stand by me C'mon stand by me stand by me”
Ben E. King knows that we all need someone to stand by us in troubled times, someone reliable and trustworthy whom we can count on.

15) Thankfulness
“I believe in miracles Where're you from, you sexy thing, you sexy thang you I believe in miracles since you came along, you sexy thing
Where did you come from, baby How did you know, I needed you How did you know I needed you so badly How did you know I'd give my heart gladly Yesterday I was one of the lonely people Now your lying close to me, making love to me”
Counting your blessings seems to be the message of this hit song from Hot Chocolate – being grateful for the wonderful and unexpected things that come along in life.

16) Wisdom
“No, you can't always get what you want You can't always get what you want You can't always get what you want But if you try sometime you find You get what you need”
Part of wisdom is knowing the difference between wants and needs. The Rolling Stones tell us that there are many things that we want but can’t have. Wisdom is learning to accept this fundamental fact. However, if we try, sometimes we can get what we actually need.

1) Identity
