What is it?

People tend to under-utilize their strengths. They have more strengths than they are aware of and use them less than they could. In times of adversity, we need to recognize our strengths and put them into practice. Ironically, it is at just such times that many people are less likely to use their strengths. They are so consumed with negative life events (e.g., divorce, illness, financial setbacks), that they forget to use the resources that have helped them in the past. By describing a broad range of positive human qualities, we give patients the opportunity to get to know their strengths. The 16 strengths are divided into four groups. Self-directedness is the ability to set and pursue one’s life’s course. Self-regulation is the ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, impulses, and behavior. Connection is the ability to form meaningful, mutual relationships. Transcendence is the ability to find purpose and meaning in life.

How does it work?

There are several ways to introduce the Healthy Adult Strengths tool. The simplest is to hand the patient the cards and ask them to select the qualities that apply to them. ‘We all have different strengths, positive qualities that can help us in different situations. Each person has different strengths. We often do not think of strengths because we are too busy focusing on what is not going well in our lives, rather than what is going well.’ Follow up by interviewing them about the qualities that they selected, going from card to card. ’Describe this quality in yourself.’ ‘Give some examples of situations in which this strength has helped you.’ Alternatively, wait for opportunities to observe one or more of the patient’s strengths. For example, when patients talk about success experiences, introduce the cards, showing the strengths that they displayed. You can even use the cards when patients tell about their difficulties, highlighting the strengths they used to cope with adversity.
