What is it?
The Healthy Adult Boat tool helps patients view their life’s journey in perspective. It has 6 panels (images), 3 on the front and 3 on the back. In the 3 front panels, the boat is sailing in stormy weather, comes out of the storm, and sails into a tranquil harbor. Most patients grasp the meaning of these pictures immediately: going through a crisis, finding one’s way out of it, and finding a safe harbor, respectively. The 3 panels on the rear side show more chronic life patterns: the boat not moving (low energy or dysthymia); the boat traveling in random directions (lacking of goals or direction); and the boat traveling around in circles (being stuck in repeating, dysfunctional patterns). The different elements on the Boat tool have a symbolic meaning. For example, the storm represents stressful life events. The waves are the emotional reactions (modes) that are triggered by life events. The boat’s wheel represents giving direction to one’s life. And so forth.
How does it work?
Introduce the Healthy Adult Boat to patients early in treatment, providing psychoeducation about their difficulties, and pointing the way to solutions based on strengths. You can continue to refer to it throughout the treatment to assess the patient’s progress. Determine what they need, and what to focus on, in each new phase of his voyage. Start by telling the patient that the boat symbolizes the patient’s Healthy Adult side making its voyage through life. Ask them for their impression of what the pictures signify. Then ask them in which phase of the voyage they see themself. Explain that the challenges in each of the phases are different. Then go through the symbolic elements of the pictures one by one, explaining what they mean, and exploring how they apply to the patient’s life. In this way, you can quickly help them see where they are struggling, and how they can progress.
Who can use it?
