What is it?
People who come to therapy often having trouble getting their emotional needs met. For example, they may lack intimacy in their relationships, or have trouble with their autonomy needs, like feeling competent and independent. Some patients feel these unmet needs acutely. Others may not recognize that they have needs, much less know how to get them fulfilled. Because human needs are universal – everyone has the same basic emotional needs – helping them to learn to recognize and meet their needs is one of our most important tasks as therapists, whatever type of therapy we practice. The Emotional Needs tool includes five universal needs: Attachment (safety, nurturance, and connection), Autonomy (independence, identity, and competence), Empathy (expression and acknowledgement of emotions), Playfulness (spontaneity, joyfulness, and playfulness), and Limits (firm and clear boundaries).
How does it work?
You can introduce the Emotional Needs tool by giving a brief explanation of what needs are, using the cards to illustrate them. ‘All human beings have the same basic emotional needs. In order to thrive, to grow in healthy ways, they need to get these basic needs met. Of course, none of us have a perfect upbringing. We all miss out on some things along the way. Fortunately, children are resourceful. They find ways of getting their needs met as best they can, given the circumstances. It is when their needs aren’t met to a significant degree that problems can arise. It can make it hard for them to learn to get their needs met when they are grown up. Maybe you already have some idea of which of these needs were met sufficiently when you were a child, and whether there were some needs where you might have missed out. Please take these cards one at a time and tell me about them.
Who can use it?
