What is it?
This 85-page book provides theory and practical guidance for using the iModes tools separately or together. Chapters cover the iModes, Emotional Needs, Healthy Adult Strengths, and Healthy Adult Boat tools. The book provides enough theory to understand the concepts behind each of the tools, followed by detailed, step-by-step explanations of many uses and techniques. The book includes many case examples contributed by users, and 15 full-color illustrations. As the book progresses, you learn how to combine different tools to make therapy even more effective.
How does it work?
You can read the chapters in order, or skip around, depending on which tool you want to learn about. The chapters build on each other, integrating material from the previous ones. Thus, as the book progresses, you learn how to combine different tools to make therapy more effective. The last chapter, which explains the uses of the Healthy Adult Boat tool, puts all five of the tools together. In fact, the Boat Tool is a visual metaphor that integrates all of the concepts in the Complete iModes System: modes, emotional needs, and strengths. At the end of the book, there is an extended case example, the case of Ruth, which shows how you can combine all of the tools in an integrated fashion.
Who can use it?
You can integrate the iModes tools into practically any form of therapy or therapeutic intervention, and use them with almost any type of client. The iModes tools are so self-explanatory that many therapists can begin using them immediately. Dr. Bernstein’s book, “Building Strengths in Therapy,” is written to help you get the most out of all the iModes tools, whether you have a background in Schema Therapy or not.
